City making great progress with major roadworks along Jakes Gerwel Drive

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility recently went out to the Jakes Gerwel Drive project site where the City is currently rehabilitating a large section of the road. The contractor is currently concluding phase 2 which stretches from the R300 to Oliver Tambo Drive and at the same time, has just started with phase 3 which will see the section from Oliver Tambo Drive to Weltevreden Drive rehabilitated by the end of November this year.

‘This multi-year long road rehabilitation project started in 2023 where the first phase of this project saw the rehabilitation of Jakes Gerwel Drive from Highlands Drive to the R300. If all goes according to plan, residents can look forward to traffic on Jakes Gerwel Drive being free flowing again from November this year. We are aware that this project along with our mega infrastructural MyCiTi Phase 2A project on AZ Berman Drive is adding great frustration for our commuters in terms of congestion and we apologise for the disruption. We ask that you please bear with us as we invest in Mitchells Plain in a manner that improves lives and commuter experiences. These projects, as disruptive and frustrating as they are now, are for the collective benefit of the entire Mitchell’s Plain, and we are sure that once all are completed, our residents will be proud of better quality roads, and a world class public transport offering to keep Cape Town moving.’

‘We understand that the current construction is disruptive, but tackling construction work in a comprehensive, large-scale manner now means we can complete the project as quickly as possible rather than stretching out the inconvenience over many years. The short-term frustration is undeniable, but the long-term benefits will be well worth it,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
